Over the past twenty years I have had the opportunity to be involved in a type of treatment, boiphysical, that I believe will someday be the mainstay of all alcohol and drug treatment. Here are some of the reasons that I hold that belief:

1. Biophysical centers don't subscribe to the idea that addiction is a chronic and progressive disease.
2. These rehab centers address the powerful nature of physical addiction.
3. Biophysical treatment centers don't attempt to provide treatment within a specific number of days, but are based on the total understanding and completion of every element of the program. (the average length of treatment is approx. 100 days)
4. They build an individuals ability to confront and solve problems.
5. Everyone gains new abilities and strength.
6. You leave the program with the knowledge that you are able to handle life, which includes resisting the use of alcohol and other drugs.
7. Most graduates don't need to attend support group meetings to keep their strength
8. Their successful outcomes are approx. 7 times greater than any other modality of treatment.

Number 8 in itself will ensure that these programs will continue to grow and as more and more addicted individuals complete biophysical programs, our communities and society are becoming more and more addiction-free.

There are a few programs that address the physical aspects of addiction by encouraging the participants to take "B" and other vitamins and address the nutritional aspects of addiction, but these programs are only looking at the obvious facts that someone that has been using alcohol and drugs in a habitual way hasn't kept regular or balanced meals during these times. This is a good augmentation to any program, but it isn't addressing two other strong physical components: a) how drugs act as poisons, and b) how drugs store in the fat tissues of the body and, when released, are the major cause of intense alcohol and drug cravings.

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone that has addiction data about biophysical programs or has attended one of these centers.
