Cocaine Addiction in Dallas

Throughout the Dallas metropolitan area, crack cocaine remains popular and easily attainable. In the past year, there were over 140 federal sentencing for dug offenses in the Dallas area. With over 11,000 residents of Texas seeking drug treatment for cocaine last year, we can see that the problem is bigger than most realize.

About Cocaine

One of the oldest drugs known to man is cocaine. The pure chemical hydrochloride has been abused for over 100 years and cocoa leaves, the source of cocaine have been ingested for over a thousand years. Cocaine has a long history of abuse and is rooted in the United States drug culture. It has strong addictive potential and is an intense euphoric drug. Cocaine is considered a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 which means it has a high potential for abuse but can be administered by a doctor for legitimate medical uses such as anesthesia for some eye, ear and throat surgeries.

The Growing Problem

Large amounts of the drug are transported by using the commercial trucking industry which can move bulk amounts (multi-hundred kilograms) quantities of Colombian cocaine. Smaller amounts are routinely seized by privately owned vehicles or couriers using buses or airlines to transport the drug. Never the less, no matter how hard the United States government tries to stop the transportation of illegal cocaine into the country there are still tons that make it onto our streets. With cocaine addicts, finding the drug is as easy as buying alcohol these days and the growing market of abusers is enabling cocaine manufactures and distribution companies to profit immensely on the sale of the drug.

Effects

Some of the effects are an increase in alertness, excitation, euphoria, increased pulse rate and blood pressure, insomnia and loss of appetite. Some more extreme effects are agitation, increased body temperature, hallucinations, convulsions, possible death.

Taken in small amounts (up to 100 mg), cocaine usually makes the user feel euphoric, energetic, talkative, and mentally alert, especially to the sensations of sight, sound, and touch. The effects of cocaine use can also temporarily decrease the need for food and sleep. Some users find that cocaine helps them perform simple physical and intellectual tasks more quickly, while others experience the opposite effect.
